Lucini, A. The two teenagers subsequently took their own lives. Both the attack and their suicides were livestreamed. The attackers’ modus operandi, their clothing, the customisation of their weapons, and the existence of a manifesto clearly highlight the presence of influences from the extreme-right accelerationist ecosystem. However, reducing the case exclusively to the extreme-right milieu would risk offering a partial interpretation of the phenomenon.

The ICSD shooting can, aesthetically and tactically, be defined as a Brenton Tarrant copycat. The main elements that identify it as such are:

The livestream of the attack;

The gear used by the attacker, which remembers Tarrant’s one;

The weapons used by the attackers, which were decorated imitating Tarrant’s one;

The title of their manifesto (which, more accurately, is a file composed of two manifestos, each written by one of the shooters), which directly refers to Tarrant;

The structure of the manifesto, which mimics Tarrant’s one, especially the Q&A at the end of Clark’s portion of the manifesto.

This, alongside the displaying of an Atomwaffen Division patch on their gear, immediately points toward white supremacy accelerationism as the main motive behind the shooting. Furthermore, most of the content of their manifesto, especially Clark’s section, quotes or mentions accelerationist figures, attackers, organisations, and propaganda. Among them, James Mason, Atomwaffen Division, and the Terrorgram collective were all mentioned, alongside attackers labelled as “saints” by the latter.

However, the content posted by the shooters on their accounts, together with what has been written in their manifesto, point to a wider background for their radicalisation process. Both seem to have been in contact with Nihilistic Violent Extremism (NVE), True Crime Community (TCC), and incel environments.

As far as their social media profiles are concerned, one of the shooters, Cain Clark, on TikTok posted a Maniacs Murder Cult (MKY) edit. This alone highlights the influence of the NVE on at least one of the attackers.

Further evidence of other influences is visible in the manifesto. The title of the section written by Vazquez is a wordplay combining “misanthrope” and “incel”, immediately setting the tone for his ideas. A whole section of his writings is devoted to his own “incel experience” and to the glorification of incel attackers, by him defined as “saints”. He even quotes Elliot Rodgers, a shooter dear to incels, as one of his heroes.

Influences from the TCC on Vazquez can also be seen in his manifesto, where he stated that he liked Omar Mateen and the Bondi Beach shooters, popular figures in the TCC infosphere that are linked to salafi-jihadism. Other attackers that are mentioned by him and are widely popular inside the TCC ecosystem, but not inside white supremacist accelerationist communities, include Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the Columbine shooters, Solomon Henderson, author of the Antioch High School shooting, and Arda Küçükyetim, author of the 2024 Eskişehir stabbing.

Clark’s section of the manifesto shows fewer influences coming from outside the white supremacist accelerationist infosphere compared to Vazquez. However, he also mentioned Elliot Rodger, quoting him in a section dedicated to modern feminism and women.

Based on their manifesto and on what remains of their social media presence, it is clear that accelerationist attackers and propaganda had a great deal of influence on them. However, even though in the manifesto they define themselves as “accelerationists”, with Vazquez stating that his “religion is the white race”, it is clear that their online presence went beyond the extreme-right digital ecosystem.

Indeed, it appears that the two guys also drew upon online extremist ecosystems linked to the sphere of violent nihilist extremism. This element confirms an increasingly observable trend in contemporary radicalisation processes: the convergence of references united by violent language and nihilistic narratives, which blend with other violent extremist ideologies, albeit primarily by adopting their aesthetic aspects.

Furthermore, the hybrid nature of the attack is also evident in the reactions recorded within the various online extremist communities. Specifically, more traditional and ideologically structured extreme-right accelerationist groups and organisations have distanced themselves from the attack, labelling it as useless to the ‘white cause’ as it was committed by two individuals who, in their view, do not fit the typical ‘white supremacist’. On the other hand, the reaction of groups closer to the nihilistic violent extremist ecosystem was different, whilst declaring that they did not fully share all the perpetrators’ ideas, these circles nevertheless expressed appreciation for the attack. In particular, propaganda has been produced presenting the attackers as ‘martyrs’, contributing to the construction of a heroic narrative typical of contemporary online extremist ecosystems.

Outside of the extreme-right digital ecosystem, TCC users have also begun a process of glorification of the attackers, usually in the form of video edits.

The case underscores the challenging nature of tracing youth radicalisation to a single ideological source in today’s context. The San Diego attack seems to belong to a transnational and digital landscape where elements of the extreme-right, accelerationist culture, violent nihilism, and online dynamics intersect. This creates fluid pathways of radicalisation that defy traditional classification.

Versione italiana

L’aver trasmesso l’attacco in diretta streaming;

Il loro equipaggiamento che ricordava quello di Tarrant;

Le loro armi che erano decorate imitando quelle di Tarrant;

Il titolo del loro manifesto (che è in realtà composto da due manifesti, ciascuno scritto da uno dei due shooter) che fa riferimento diretto a Tarrant;

On 18 May, at the Islamic Centre of San Diego (ICSD), California, Cain Clark and Caleb Vazquez, aged 17 and 18 respectively, carried out a shooting that left three people dead.
